Accessible & WCAG-Compliant Publication Design
Last updated: February 2026
Accessible By Design, Not An Afterthought
We design WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA accessible annual reports, impact reports and publications for organisations that need every reader to be able to access their story — not just most of them.
For government bodies, not-for-profits and community organisations, an accessible publication is often a core deliverable, and increasingly a legal obligation under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) and government accessibility reporting requirements. At Jen Clark Design, we treat accessibility as a design discipline in its own right — built in from the first concept, not bolted on at the end.
Senior-led. No shortcuts. 25+ years of results.
Publications built to be genuinely usable by screen reader users, not just automatically “passed”.
Trusted by Victorian Government bodies, healthcare providers, and national not-for-profits.
Our Approach To Accessible Publication Design
Accessibility isn't a production step we apply at the end of a project. It's part of how we plan, design and build every publication from the outset.
Companion Format
Alongside an accessible PDF, we recommend delivering an accessible Microsoft Word version of every report. For government and not-for-profit publications, Word is often the most practical, maintainable format for internal teams. It is widely compatible with assistive technology, familiar to screen reader users, and easy to keep current without specialist web infrastructure.
Considered Tagging
We build documents with accessibility in mind from the outset: correct paragraph styles, logical reading order and proper heading hierarchy. For complex, data-rich publications, the exported PDF is then manually reviewed and refined in Adobe Acrobat Pro — automated export alone is rarely enough to get this right.
Meaningful Alt Text
Every image, chart, infographic and decorative element is handled individually. Meaningful graphics receive descriptive alt text written to convey the substance of the content, not just a label. Decorative elements are marked as artefacts so they're correctly ignored by assistive technology. Where data visualisations are complex, we also provide a text-based summary or data table as a supplement.
Rigorous Testing
Before delivery, every accessible PDF is tested using Adobe Acrobat Pro's Accessibility Checker, with all flagged issues resolved before final export. We also conduct a manual reading-order check and, where time permits, a screen reader review using NVDA or an equivalent tool. If any accessibility issues are identified after delivery, we rectify them and provide a revised, compliant version within scope.
Who We Work With
This approach has been developed and refined across accessible publication projects for:
Government bodies and statutory authorities
Not-for-profits and community service organisations
Healthcare and allied health providers
Education providers
Why It Matters
Good design should be human, purposeful, engaging and inclusive — and accessible to individuals, businesses and organisations of all shapes and sizes. An accessible publication reaches every reader it was written for, meets your compliance obligations, and reflects the same care and credibility you bring to your own work.
